Tatum's Garden creators given national award
Shawn and Amanda Bakker were presented with the national Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award for outstanding public service for their creation of Tatum's Garden in Salinas.
The Bakkers are the owners of Bakker Construction in Salinas.
They were presented with the award in Washington, D.C. for their efforts in building Salinas' first fully accessible and inclusive playground.
"We are humbled and honored to represent the Salinas community with this national honor," said Amanda Bakker. "But we realize we are only two people, who stand for an incredible board, committee, and thousands of volunteers who helped make our dream of Tatum’s Garden possible."
They are among 50 recipients of the award, which recognizes individuals who had made significant public service contributions.
The 20,000-square-foot Tatum's Garden at 1 Maryal Drive in Salinas opened in December.
