Streets, businesses shut down on Constitution in Salinas

SALINAS, Calif. -

Salinas police shot and killed a suspect Thursday night just before 10 p.m. at the Creekbridge shopping center off Constitution Boulevard.

Police said the officer-involved shooting happened by the WingStop restaurant.

Claudia Young, owner of the restaurant, said she was out of town, but was told by employees the shooting occurred in the parking lot, not in the actual restaurant.

Police initially received a report of a suspicious person in the parking lot armed with a handgun.  When Officers arrived on scene, police said the suspect lifted his sweatshirt, where he carried the handgun. Fearing that the suspect was going to shoot, three officers shot the suspect. No officers were injured.

A K-9 officer was injured, but is expected to recover.

Constitution was shut down for several hours. A part of the shopping center also remained closed.
