SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -

Just before 2:00 AM Monday, Santa Cruz Fire responded to a structure fire on the 100 block of Park Place. Crews found a shed fully engulfed, with two house partially on fire.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire, and stopped it from spreading into the homes. The shed and it's contents were completely destroyed.

The first home had exterior damage, while the second home had significant interior damage.

The fire started outside between the two homes, but the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The homes had been converted into apartments.

In the first home, 8 people were evacuated. No one was injured. The second home had two occupants, who were able to get out, but a pet was lost, and there was significant damage to their belongings.

Red Cross was able to provide temporary shelter for the 10 people displaced. Three units are uninhabitable because of smoke and fire damage.

Damages are estimated to be around $100,000.
