SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -

A 49-year-old man died after being struck by a car on Mission Street Thursday night, Santa Cruz police said.

The man reportedly had left what police referred to as an "alcohol outlet" just after 10 p.m. and was struck while crossing the street. The accident occurred in the northbound lanes of Mission Street near the intersection of King Street.

He was taken to Dominican Hospital but was pronounced deadly shortly after arriving there. The driver of the car was not injured and was cooperative with police investigators, officers said.

Officers believe the man was in the crosswalk at the time of the collision, but the investigation is still in its preliminary stages. Mission Street was closed between Fair Avenue and Swift Street for about four hours while officers investigated.

Police are asking any witnesses to call the department's traffic investigation unit at 420-5862 or the anonymous tip line, 420-5995.
