Accident on John Street closes on-ramp

SALINAS, Calif. -

A 46-year-old motorcyclist remained unconscious at a San Jose trauma center Wednesday morning after a major accident on John Street.

Alejandro Andrade was riding westbound on John Street on the overpass above Highway 101 Tuesday afternoon, Salinas police said.

Sharon Battle, 64, was driving northbound on 101 and took the off-ramp onto John Street,  where she made a right turn before changing lanes in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle struck the left/front fender area of Battle's car and went down in the opposing lane.

Andrade was wearing a helmet but, nonetheless, struck his head on the pavement and was rendered unconscious. He was flown to a trauma center at a San Jose area hospital.

As of 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, police reported that he was still unconscious and was in the intensive care unit. The accident is under investigation.
