No Shortage of Flu Shots

SALINAS, Calif. -

Thursday Central Coast News called 10 different pharmacies across the Central Coast to see if there were flu shots still available. Seven out of the 10 said they were out or running low.

CVS, Safeway and Target stores in Salinas, Santa Cruz and Hollister have tried to get more but they said the suppliers are out of it. The reason: because suppliers and providers thought the flu season would die off a lot sooner.

Is there a shortage?

"No there's not a shortage of vaccine," said Kristy Michie with the Monterey County Health Department. "There's plenty of vaccine available from the manufacturers and the distributors."

The state health department agrees.

"The vaccine is widely available: The California Department of Public Health has not received any reports concerning challenges with the vaccine supply," it said via email.

At least one Salinas Walgreens said it had plenty of vaccine. While other pharmacies said they only had the nasal spray or only had shots available for people 65 and over.

With eight people dead this season, the flu season isn't over.

"It's not unusual to see flu activity through March so we have at least a good six weeks left in the season," Michie said.

The Monterey County Health Department says there are plenty of vaccine at its clinics in Seaside and Salinas.
