Fishy Oil Spill in Monterey Harbor

3 an early morning call for an oil spill in the monterey harbor had crews rushing to the scene! what they found when they got there was a little fishy. 3 central coast news reporter, cassandra arsenault, is live in the newsroom..cassy what did they find? 3 3 well jon, the substance they found was 300 yards of *an* oil...turned out to be anchovy oil. but when it comes to an oil spill in the federally protected marine sanctuary cleanup crews take every call seriously. 3 *trt 1:20outcue:be a central coast staple for years to come... nat:*15-20 hundreds of sea lions getting some sun is a regular scene at the monterey harbor..its marine life like this that fire crews and the coast guard were all hands on deck today when they heard there was a potential oil spill.11:26:39 they found a sheen that actually spread out over 300 yards and we didn't know if it was gasoline or hydrolic fluid or the alike..stewart roth, 3 division chief at the monterey fire department, said that any oil like anchovy oil slicked over the water can look like a hazardous oil spill..and they have an emergency action plan just in case it is.11:26:55 we activated our 3 unified command and brought in the coast guard, the harbor master, we launched our fire boat to start doing an investigation of the area. during the investigation they test the water for any traces of harmful substances.11:28:36 the absorbant pads weren't picking up the petroleum product which means its some other type of potentially organic product.in this case -- oil from the tiny anchovy fish. even though the marine life is highly regarded in the monterey bay, small oil spills have happened before. 11:28:05 we do these type of incidents quite a few times a year in a fishing area..like this.so crews never think twice before jumping into action.11:27:40 we are going to do our utmost to boom the area if we have to--to absorb whatever material we can.so these guys will be a central coast staple for years to come... nat 3 even though the coast guard, harbor master, and monterey fire were on scene, the monterey county health department is responsible for testing the water. they say it's a joint effort to keep our precious waters as safe as possible. in the newsroom, i'm cassandra arsenault, your central coast news. 3
